Started on the 5.5 and persevered despite evidence that I was overpowered -
ending up upwind, gybing reluctance etc. I just couldn't believe it was
that windy, plus I'd left the 4.7 and mast in the car park.
When the big guys changed to 5.2s and pronounced themselves comfortable I
made the effort and rigged the 4.7. It took a while to get all this sorted
and I was taking it easy, having a coffee and so on, as I was feeling a bit
lazy today. When I finally went out I was surprised to find that I was
still a tad overpowered. By now the tide had fallen and the rolling swells
had changed to flatter but shorter chop. All the involuntary jumps were
getting air under the board and making for a bouncy ride.
I noticed that some people were going further out and pretty much staying
there as the wind was less gusty offshore. Inshore it was super gusty with
the occasional failure to waterstart and then a few seconds later totally
maxxed.
The sun came out a bit later but generally the only fly in the ointment was
the gustiness of it all (hence only 4 stars). So more a lesson in dealing
with hard conditions than a pure pleasure session. But rewarding
nonetheless.
On the way home there was a full rainbow over Chiddingfold - the second
this summer on a drive home after a session. Just part of the wonder of
this summer.
